FCC Dinner - October 18 2011 REMINDER - Uniqlo - the story behind +J and the man behind the story

Dear FCCers and friends of FCC

In October FCC has the pleasure to welcome Uniqlo’s creative director Yukihiro Katsuta, Senior Vice-President of Global Research and Design to talk to us about his globe trotting life and his responsibilities for new store openings in New York for example and his negotiations with iconic design Jil Sander to create +J.

Yukihiro Katsuta joined Fast Retailing five years ago from a background in luxury retailing at stores such as Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman in New York and Isetan in Tokyo. He has in-depth knowledge of the brands he has sold over the years 窶・Polo Ralph Lauren, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Armani, and, of course, Jil Sander, a label he admired both personally and professionally. So much so that he managed to persuade Jil Sander to come out of retirement to create a special line of clothing for Uniqlo.

Yukihiro Katsuta has such a hectic schedule travelling between Tokyo and his other design team in New York he says it leaves him jet-lagged 365 days a year!

When Katsuta joined Uniqlo, he discussed with Mr Yanai how they could improve and update their core business of basics to keep them exciting season after season. He knew that what sells over and over again is basics, be that a white Dolce & Gabbana shirt or a navy Armani suit. 'I also knew it was a most difficult challenge. The last five years has been spent trying to challenge how Uniqlo can update or improve these basic concepts or products.
So join us for what promises to be an exciting presentation by one of Japan's most influential fashionista.

FCC - Forum for Corporate Communications is a non-profit networking group for professionals in communications, marketing, PR, branding and advertising. Members and guests typically work for a wide range of businesses from global corporations through to local entrepreneurs who are a mix of Japanese and numerous other nationalities. Meetings are held in English. FCC is a great place to make new business contacts and social connections.
